What Is Shiatsu Therapeutic Massage?
Shiatsu is a Japanese massage technique; the word meaning
"finger pressure". Shiatsu uses the same concepts of 'energy
movement' as acupuncture. In a similar fashion to Acupuncture,
Shiatsu aims to correct energy imbalances by releasing energy
blockages, and moving energy into areas that are depleted. The
Shiatsu employs traditional massage and other manipulative techniques to adjust the body's
physical structure and its related inner energies. Shiatsu Therapeutic Massage combines the
Western understanding of anatomy and physiology with traditional Eastern approaches. This
method is simple, powerful and holistic. Results include both specific and general healing, an
increased sense of well-being and relief from pain and discomfort.
Shiatsu Massage is characterised by its simplicity and a gentle, non-invasive touch. This
method promotes maximum relaxation and a profound sense of ease and well-being. It is
one of the most popular forms of massage today. Shiatsu is very pleasant and soothing and
is often used to enhance general health and vitality. Shiatsu Therapeutic Massage supports
the body's own natural healing processes. This helps to promote and maintain a natural state
of balance and comfort.
Shiatsu therapy is usually applied with the recipient lying on a futon (a soft, upholstered
mat), however in some circumstances, a chair or a massage table may be preferred. It works
the entire body through stretching, gentle joint manipulation, and pressure techniques to
balance energy and enhance the body's ability to heal itself.
Historically Shiatsu was mainly used within families. In this century Japanese therapists have
developed Shiatsu into a professional therapy. They introduced Shiatsu in Europe. At the
moment Shiatsu is becoming increasingly well known in Europe. That is not strange, because
Shiatsu is very effective and easy to apply within the home environment or in a professional
practice.

Gaia Shiatsu Practitioners:
Shiatsu has been used to treat a wide range of conditions including muscular aches and
pains, restricted mobility, back, neck and shoulder pain, circulatory problems, digestive
disorders, menstrual disorders, sinusitis, catarrh, asthma and bronchitis, migraine, headaches,
chronic fatigue and stress related problems such as anxiety, insomnia, and depression.
Scientific research has suggested that pressure applied during treatments may encourage
your body to release endorphins (natural painkillers). Some of our clients feel very relaxed
and sleepy after a Shiatsu treatment, whilst others leave feeling invigorated and energised.
People describe experiencing "Whole body relaxation" and "tension melting away" and "it's
such a relief from the pain".
techniques unblock the flow of energy and encourage blood and lymphatic flow. They also
promote relaxation, strengthen your body against disease, and restore balance. However,
instead of stimulating the body with needles, the practitioner uses thumbs, fingers, palms,
and in some instances, elbows, and even their knees and feet.
