Wellness can be defined as the pursuit of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Wellness, as a concept, is generally thought to mean more
than the mere absence of disease or infirmity. Rather it is an optimal state of living, a dimension that includes the social,
emotional, and spiritual aspects of health; a condition of good physical and mental health, especially when maintained by proper
diet, exercise, and habits. Wellness is not just pursued by people interested in recovering from ill health or specific health
conditions but also by those interested in optimising their already good state of health.
The term ‘Wellness’ has been used in the context of alternative medicine since Halbert Dunn began using the phrase high level
wellness in the 1950’s, based on a series of lectures at a Unitarian Universalist Church in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States.
The modern concept of wellness did not, however, become popular until the 1970's.
Wellness is first and foremost a choice to assume responsibility for the quality of your life. It begins with a conscious decision to
shape a healthy lifestyle. Wellness is a mind set, a predisposition to adopt a series of key principles in varied life areas that lead to
high levels of well-being and life satisfaction.
Wellness is an active, lifelong process of becoming aware of choices and making decisions toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.
Wellness involves choices about our lives and our priorities that determine our lifestyles. For the purpose of our Wellness pages it
includes the adoption of behaviours that prolong and enhance the state of being healthy, and by extension, the lifespan itself.
Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind-body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well being
[the state of being healthy, happy, or prosperous]. Wellness as a concept exists on a continuum and is unique to each individual
person. Each of us defines our own wellness - you know whether you're well or not well. That's the way it works. It's a unique
thing based on our individual circumstances and perceptions. And wellness in this view is also seen as an holistic concept. It's
looking at the whole person and not just at your blood pressure level, or how much you weigh, or how well you manage your
stress.
We believe that many factors contribute to wellness: living in a clean environment, eating organic food, regularly engaging in
physical exercise, balance in career/family/relationships, to mention a few. Thus in the Wellness pages we will present articles and
information outside of health, fitness, and nutrition (covered elsewhere) that relate to ‘feeling good’ in oneself, as opposed to
merely being free of ‘illness’.
