SPICES AID ARTHRITIS
It was reported recently in the US that a woman who suffered persistent pain and swelling due to arthritis noticed the pain and
swelling subsided shortly after consuming spicy food. She had been attending Indian cooking classes In an effort to improve her
eating habits,  and had begun seasoning her food with curry spices.

One of the primary spices in curry, Turmeric, is known to relieve the symptoms of arthritis. Recent research, published in the
journal Arthritis and Rheumatism, showed that injections of Turmeric almost completely eliminated joint swelling in rats that were
bred to develop rheumatoid arthritis. Numerous population and laboratory studies have also shown that the use of Turmeric is
related to lower rates of breast, prostate, and colon cancer.

Another useful spice is Ginger. It has been used for centuries as a remedy for several health problems, which include the
following: nausea, stomachache, motion sickness and migraine. Research has shown that it can also be used to relieve the pain of
arthritis. In one study, Ginger was added to the diet of one arthritic sufferer every day for 3 months. At the end of this period he
was completely free of pain and swelling!

So if you suffer arthritic aches and pains, get some Ginger into your daily diet. You can take it straight, 1/3 teaspoon at a time,
two to three times a day. Better yet, enjoy it in tea, cookies, muffins, cake, and best of all in chocolate.  

Spices - especially Turmeric and Ginger (also an ingredient of Curry Powder) - are some of the most healthful and bioactive foods
available. Not only will they add flavour to your food, but, quite possibly, years to your life. So next time you are in the
supermarket, pick up a bottle of curry powder to complement a wide variety of dishes. You may also consider purchasing
Turmeric and Ginger as nutritional supplements.

FRUIT FOR HEADACHE AND MIGRAINE RELIEF
Try these ‘fruity’ ideas to cure your head pain.
  • For a headache - take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead.
  • For Migraines - sniff an apple. NB, the apples MUST be green. A US study showed that migraine sufferers can ease their
    pain by this method!

On the topic of Migraines here’s a report of a new approach to dealing with the condition. There is quite a bit of evidence that
migraine sufferers have an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Many medical professionals thought
there might be a causal relationship. However, it now appears that is not the case.

New research suggests that insulin resistance may be a possible cause for both migraines and various vascular conditions. Insulin
resistance, and high concentrations of blood sugar which result, are known risk factors for vascular disease. Migraine sufferers
commonly also experience insulin resistance.

The University of Turin's Headache Centre carried out a study to compare insulin sensitivity in migraine patients. At the outset,
both the migraine patients and a control group had similar levels of sugar and insulin in their bloodstream. Both groups were
administered a high-sugar drink. The migraine patients’ blood sugar levels remained significantly higher and longer than the control
group. The migraine group was also shown have insulin resistance.

If you have been diagnosed with migraine, improving your insulin sensitivity might not only reduce the incidence, it would also
reduce your risk of heart disease. Two ways to improve your insulin sensitivity, are to eliminate sweets and high-glycaemic
carbohydrates from your diet and to exercise consistently. Resistance exercise (bodyweight callisthenics or weight lifting) and high-
intensity cardio are the most effective ways of reducing insulin resistance. You might also consider supplements such as
magnesium, chromium, and cinnamon. These are known to improve insulin sensitivity and benefit blood sugar levels.

SUNBURN PAIN RELIEF
Avoid expensive creams and lotions, they do little more than moisturise the skin. Try these tips instead:
  • Apply Aloe Vera gel*. This plant extract contains Latinan, which has the effect of slowly negating the effects of radiation
    burns. Do note however, that it does take longer to soothe than creams but it also relieves the sting.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar can take out the burn (Malic acid in apple cider vinegar negates the negative response by re-
    establishing your skin's pH).
  • apply the following mixture to any burnt skin: lavender oil, tea, yoghourt, St. John's Wort and cucumbers. You will find
    that the burn should be soothed.

SOME NUTRITIONAL TIPS FOR PAIN RELIEF
On one of our Wellness pages we featured Pain, and some natural ways to deal with the problem. On this page
we present some Nutritional tips that we have found, which may aid pain relief.  
POST WORKOUT PAIN RELIEF
Caffeine used to be one of the most-used performance-enhancing drugs. The buzz was that it not only did it make exertion feel
easier but it also helped ease post competition aches and pains.

Research carried out at the University of Georgia discovered that an equivalent dose of caffeine to two cups of coffee can cut
post-exertion muscle pain (DOMS). Their findings - published in The Journal of Pain - showed that caffeine lowered pain by as
much as 48 percent. Caffeine actually proved more effective than the common pain relievers Naproxen (Aleve), Aspirin, and
Ibuprofen (Advil).

If you do workout regularly we don’t suggest you to down loads of coffee afterwards. Always use caffeine in moderation. Too
much caffeine can produce side effects like jitteriness or heart palpitations. Note that this study also found regular coffee drinkers
didn't get as much pain relief as those who rarely drank caffeinated drinks. And if you don't tolerate caffeine well, try using
Ribose, a non-addictive alternative, with no side effects. Dissolve a dose of two to five grams of this simple sugar in water and
drink it before a workout, to reduce exercise-induced muscle cramping and soreness.
Additional relief may be found by applying a cool, wet compress (or towel) over sunburned area; change every hour. Do this for
about half a day. Adding a little apple cider vinegar to this compress will help easing the pain and stop the itchiness.
