Try lavender. Just add a few drops of lavender oil to the red-pepper lotion. Lavender oil is useful for treating inflammation and
burns.
Eat some Turmeric with your meals. This spice contains curcumin, an anti-inflammatory chemical. Add some black pepper to your
food along with the turmeric. The compounds in black pepper will help activate the curcumin.
Finally, try Cumin. This common spice contains three pain-relieving compounds, seven anti-inflammatory ones and four that combat
swelling.
To enable wound healing to occur, the body requires certain nutrients that include protein, essential fatty acids, folate, zinc, and
potassium. In addition the Vitamins C (iron absorption/cell repair); E (tissue replacement); B5 (anti stress hormones); and K found
in Kale (blood clotting) all assist in wound healing. They also help to reduce bruising.
These nutrients can be found in: Meat, liver, shellfish, eggs, nuts (inc. walnuts), Sunflower/pumpkin seeds, oats, avocadoes,
green leafy vegetables, bell peppers, sweet potato, broccoli, strawberries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, apricots, peaches, Kiwi fruit,
and pineapple, which also contains iodine (helps to reduce inflammation).
Two further supplements that can prove useful are Echinacea and Garlic. Echinacea is an antiseptic, and an antiviral compound,
that activates white blood cells to enhance resistance to infection and boost the immune system. Garlic has similar properties to
Echinacea – use crushed and raw, or 'slightly' cooked and sprinkled on your meal, or taken as a supplement (ask us for details).
FOOD TO AID IMMUNITY AND FIGHT INFECTION
Choose from: Shellfish, chicken liver, oily fish. For powerful antioxidants: oranges, carrots, sweet potato.
Minerals that assist include. zinc, calcium, copper, iodine found in sunflower seeds, seaweed, cranberries, onion, blackcurrants, and
(manuka) honey.
ONIONS AND GARLIC ... "POWERFUL" IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE
If you enjoy the taste of garlic and onions - and eat them often - you're doing a lot more than adding some flavour to your meals.
You could be adding years to your life.
The Allium plants - particularly onions, shallots, and garlic - have been used as food and medicine for thousands of years. Modern
science has confirmed that these pungent vegetables are some of the most medicinally potent foods we can eat. Hundreds of
population and laboratory studies have shown that they have strong anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and immune-boosting qualities.
They have also been shown to reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol, and normalise blood pressure. A large Italian study,
recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, shows a strong inverse correlation between onion and garlic
consumption and cancers of the mouth, oesophagus, breast, ovaries, kidneys, and prostate, i.e. the more you eat the greater
the reduction in risk of developing these debilitating and life threatening conditions.
So whenever you have a chance to slice a shallot for your salad, put an onion in your sandwich, or press some garlic to go with
your mixed vegetables, do it!
NUTRITIONAL APPROACHES TO ASSIST WOUND HEALING AND INFLAMMATION

NB Drink plenty of water; avoid or reduce stress levels.

TIPS FOR TREATING INFLAMMATION
Cayenne, or red, pepper contains six pain-relieving compounds and seven that are anti-inflammatory. Add several
teaspoons of powdered cayenne to a quarter-cup of skin lotion and rub it on the affected area. Wash your hands
thoroughly in milk afterwards (water won't do the trick) to stop it getting in your eyes or on other sensitive parts.

KNOW YOUR ONIONS
People are quick to talk about the benefits of garlic, but onions are from the same family, can be used in loads of recipes and don’
t make your breath smell!
Eat like an Egyptian: For over 4,000 years onions have been used for medical purposes. Egyptians numbered over 8000 onion-
alleviated ailments. The esteemed Greek physician Hippocrates prescribed onions as a diuretic, wound healer and pneumonia
fighter.
Onions are highly recommended for people trying to prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer and infections. Like most vegetables,
sweet, yellow onions are fat and cholesterol free, and contain very little sodium.
Combat heart disease: Onions contain 25 active compounds that appear to inhibit the growth of cancerous cells, help combat
heart disease, inhibit strokes, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and stimulate the immune system.
They’re also antibacterial and antifungal, so they can help ward off colds and relieve stomach upset and other gastrointestinal
disorders.
Of all the healthy benefits of onions, two elements stand out: sulphur (a compound) and quercetin (a flavonoid). They each have
been shown to help neutralise the free radicals in the body, and protect the membranes of the body's cells from damage.
As with garlic, onions help prevent thrombosis and reduce hypertension. The juice of one yellow or white onion a day can raise
HDL cholesterol (the good stuff) by 30% over time. Red onions don't provide the same effect.
