Nutrition...
As with the other sections we need to proceed with some definitions.
One catchall description is:
“…the process and practice by which living organisms (creatures) obtain, take in, assimilate, and utilise nourishing
substances (food and drink) for the purposes of health and metabolism, energy provision, cell growth and
maintenance/repair (replacement of tissues), and fighting infections”.
Thus Nutrition, by definition, is the way our bodies take in and use food. Foods that are great sources of nutrition are called
nutrients. There are six different types of nutrients:
Nutrition is a multi stage process.
It includes:
- Ingestion - food and/or drink is consumed
- Digestion - the body breaks down the food or drink into ‘nutrients’
- Transportation - the ‘nutrients’ travel through the bloodstream to different parts of the body
- Absorption and assimilation - the ‘nutrients’ are taken into the cells where they are used for "fuel" and other purposes
- Excretion - finally, unwanted (‘waste’) substances are eliminated from the body.

Nutrients give us substances to provide energy, to aid growth and repair of body tissues, and to assist the regulation of body
functions. Therefore each type of nutrient is vital to your health. To give the body proper nutrition, a person has to eat and drink
enough of the foods that contain key nutrients, in the correct balance. Too much of one or the other create imbalances, which
lead to poor health and the development of many of the diseases of modern society.
Energy
You need energy for all activities, including riding a bike, taking a test in school, or sleeping. The energy we use can also be
measured in calories. A calorie, by definition, is a measure of the energy content in one or more foods. The more calories you eat,
the more energy you will have. However, if this energy is not consumed it is stored in the body, for later use, usually in the form
of body fat.
In this section we will be presenting information that will complement our other sections, but which may contradict conventional
views of Nutrition.
Just read and decide for yourself.
