What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses guided imagery, and positive
suggestion to help the sub-conscious mind to change negative thinking patterns.
Hypnotherapy teaches you relaxation techniques. It can help where “will-power” alone
cannot. “Will-power” is controlled by the Conscious mind.
THE CONSCIOUS MIND: The conscious mind is the part of us that controls the way we
think about things on an everyday level. If we want to change a habit or a part of our lives
that is not longer working for us then we think “ok, I’ll do it this way now”. That is the way
our conscious mind works, there and then it doesn’t go any deeper than that. There I only
one problem with this, and that is that sooner or later, something will probably stop all our
good intentions - a stressful day at work, or at home, an unscheduled event, etc..and we
fall back into our old thinking patterns. All habits take time to change, think about how
long you’ve been acting them out for?
THE SUB-CONSCIOUS MIND: It is the sub-conscious mind that controls our habits, our
behaviours, and our reactions to things in our lives, it’s part of our autonomic nervous
system - in other words, it is the part of our body & brain that does everything
automatically such as breathing. This part of the brain is only interested in our own
wellfair, it protects us from harm, but it doesn’t know the difference between reality &
fantasy. It acts on the basis that if that behaviour or reaction worked for us more than
once and protected us, then it must be right! So if you learnt that the sky was green
when you were little, and everything around you, people you met said the sky was green
– then this is what will be programmed into our sub-conscious. If we can access the sub-
conscious mind then we can facilitate positive changes in our lives. This is the theory
behind hypnotherapy.
It is important to bear in mind however, that all habits, negative behaviours etc.. have
taken years to become ingrained in the psychi, it takes longer than one session of
hypnotherapy to change the habits of a lifetime! And it is important also to point out that
it will only work if you want it to. If your motivation to change is there, you will succeed, if
its not, you may not! Also, examine the reasons that you want to change, is it because
you want to or because someone else wants you to? Where is your support network
coming from?
Most negative traits and behaviours, anxiety states etc. respond well to hypnotherapy,
and usually 6 sessions or more is recommended. There is only one exception to that
rule, that being “Quit smoking”. Smoking can be viewed as a habit or as a lifestyle
choice. Hypnotherapy can help in most cases, and one session we can change your
perceptions of smoking, therefore aiding your own decision to stop for good. For some
people, they may need an extra session a few months down the line, but it is all
dependant on the individual involved.
Hypnotherapy can help in many various habitual states, or anxiety reactions and
behaviours, however, if you are receiving medical intervention eg: drugs for a mental
condition then Hypnotherapy may not be for you. All of these points are discussed in the
consultation which is governed by the data protection Act and is completely confidential.

Total relaxation, breathing techniques, guided imagery, and positive suggestion make this
a very effective treatment helping with the many and various problems listed above.
Hypnosis is something that almost everybody has heard of, and yet is still probably one of
the more misunderstood topics in the world. The fact of the matter is that trance is a
natural part of human life, describing the state of consciousness that allows you to
become lost in what you're reading, ignoring the noises that are always there, or to enjoy
imagining that dream holiday even whilst you do everyday tasks like washing up on a kind
of mental autopilot.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is simply the controlled use of your unconscious ability to change your state in
ways that are beneficial to creating what you really desire in your behaviour or thinking,
and that kind of changes are lasting changes.
Hypnosis can help you in:
- Removing phobias, (e.g. fear of spiders, heights, dogs, etc.)
- Beating habits, such as smoking, nail biting or overeating
- Stopping obsessive or unhelpful thoughts
- Pain relief and rapid healing after injuries
- Long term reduction of allergic reactions, such as fur, hay fever, etc.
- Reducing anxiety and stress.
It isn’t always about fixing problems either, hypnosis is also great for personal and life
enhancements like:
- Creating better sleep
- Improved mental agility
- Indeed almost any change that can be made at an unconscious level.
