 About Homeopathy

Homeopathy: a little goes a long way...

Over thirty million people in Europe already benefit from homeopathic treatment. Homeopathy could help you too.

How Long has Homeopathy Been Used?

Homeopathy has been used in the UK for over two hundred years, but has an honourable tradition dating back to ancient Greece. However, the scientific and philosophical foundations of this gentler way of healing were developed by a brilliant German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, in 1796. These scientific principles form the basis of successful homeopathic practice today.

In 2000, the House of Lords’ Select Committee on Science & Technology cited homeopathy as one of the five Group One therapies, having “an individual diagnostic approach” along with osteopathy, chiropractic, herbal medicine and acupuncture.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a gentle, holistic system of healing, suitable for everyone, young and old. Hahnemann discovered that when a healthy person took certain substances in large doses, they would develop particular symptoms of illness. He then went on to discover that this very same substance when taken in minute specially prepared doses can produce a 'cure' in a sick person who is suffering with a similar set of symptoms. This is referred to as 'curing like with like’.

Homeopathic remedies work on the principle that diluted natural substances given to a healthy person, will produce the symptoms the medicine is prescribed for. For example, coffee - or Coffea as it is known in Latin - is well known for its stimulative effect on the system causing temporary insomnia. Coffea, used in minute potentised (homeopathic) doses, can alleviate insomnia. Another example is that chopping onions can cause your nose and eyes to run with copious amounts of water. The onion (Allium cepa) can be used homeopathically to treat colds and hay fever where the main symptoms include runny eyes and nose.

How Does Homeopathy Work?

Homeopathy works on the principle that all symptoms of illness are a mere manifestation and physical expression of disharmony and imbalance within your body. Thus each patient is treated on an individual basis, concentrating on treating the specific physical and emotional symptoms unique to you, to give long lasting benefits. It is often the case that several people suffering from the same type of condition may receive completely different remedies. Homeopathy assists the natural tendency of the human body to heal itself:

Homeopathy focuses on you as an individual, concentrating on treating your specific physical and emotional symptoms, to give long lasting benefits.

Homeopathic Medicine treats the "whole" person because homeopaths believe that the mind and body operate as one. Therefore, we treat on every level: physically, emotionally, and mentally. A carefully selected remedy works by stimulating the body's own natural defence system, encouraging healing from within, thus restoring health and balance.

Homeopathy not only helps restore the sick to health, it also offers a method of maintaining health and preventing illness. It is a subtle yet effective therapy that can correct small imbalances long before the appearance of the more serious symptoms, which denote the onset of a particular disease.

Are Homeopathic Remedies Safe?

Homeopathic remedies are a unique, potentised energy medicine that work by gently boosting the natural energy of the body, and are very safe, even for pregnant and sensitive patients. All homeopathic remedies arc non-toxic, there is no danger of addiction.

What Happens When You See a Homeopath?

Your homeopath understands that establishing good health involves treating both mind and body, healing process, a remedy closest to your individual symptom picture is prescribed. Healing begins from within your body, strengthening your health and immune system, without any danger of damaging side effects.

The Consultation

In the assessment of you, the patient, homeopaths will take into account the range of physical, emotional and lifestyle factors in order to prescribe the right medicine(s).

The first consultation is a very detailed process where you will spend up to 2 hours providing enough information to enable the your consultant to prescribe the best medicine for you. You will be asked many questions, not only about your condition, but also about general aspects of your life, emotional state, how you deal with stress, sleep patterns, and energy levels. Details of your past medical history and also that of your family are also important factors to consider. Follow-up appointments require less time.

Finally, your consultant will carefully assess all the information you have given and prescribe a suitable remedy. Sometimes they will spend additional time working on your case, after the consultation has ended. The remedy will then be forwarded to you by post. Initially, once treatment has begun, many people report a feeling of optimism, well being relaxation and an increase in energy levels.

How Long Will Treatment Take?

This depends on the nature of the illness and how long yon have had it. A slowly developing chronic condition may take time to improve significantly, although some relief can be expected reasonably soon after taking a remedy. Acute disorders and common complaints are likely to improve more rapidly. The aim of homeopathic medicine is to get you to a good level of health so that eventually you will need infrequent treatment.

Homeopathy For All

Homeopathy can be used effectively by everyone, from babies and children to adults, including women during pregnancy. Homeopathic medicines promote the body’s natural ability to heal. When prescribed appropriately, they are safe, non-toxic and non-addictive. They can be taken alongside drugs prescribed by your doctor and will not interfere with their beneficial action. As your condition improves, you may be able to safely reduce your conventional medication, thereby avoiding the unwanted effects that sometimes accompany the long-term use of drugs.

NB: you should always consult with your GP before making changes to your conventional medication.

What can Homeopathy treat?

Homeopathic medicine can potentially help any condition or illness, acute and chronic, as it works on the basis that given the right stimulus the body can overcome virtually any disease. Homeopathy has a wide application, from acute fevers, sore throats and toothache, to chronic illnesses such as arthritis, eczema, asthma, anxiety, mild depression, and chronic fatigue syndrome. There has been some very good research evidence to support this.

Conditions helped with Homeopathy include:

Homeopathy stimulates body’s own healing process. It can be safely used alongside most conventional medicines, as it works at root level and restores deviated immunity back to normalcy.

Homeopathy has long recognised the influence of emotions and stress at the base of various bodily diseases and has gentle and effective medicines to influence psyche of the person positively. Homeopathy uses natural medicinal substances in ultra-minute quantity rendering a treatment that is extremely effective yet absolutely free from any side effects whatsoever. In short, homeopathy treats the cause and not merely the symptoms of the disease. As a result, homeopathy treats the disease and does not merely suppress the expression of disease.

What are the Remedies Made From?

Remedies can be made from virtually any natural product but are mainly derived from plant, animal, and mineral sources. Each remedy undergoes a special preparation process called 'potentisation' (see below). This process results in a medicine that has a powerful yet gentle therapeutic healing action upon the body, with a reduced likelihood of any unwanted effects.

How are Homeopathic Medicines Made?

To maximise the healing potential of the medicines he used, Hahnemann prepared them in a very specific manner. This involved diluting the substance concerned, and then shaking it vigorously with impact. This sequence of actions is known as succussion. A substance can be diluted and succussed many times, and Hahnemann termed this process potentisation. Hahnemann observed that potentisation made the medicines more effective and reduced the likelihood of unwanted effects.

Each new homeopathic medicine undergoes a particular process called a ‘proving’. Volunteers or ‘provers’ take the new substance until they experience symptoms. All symptoms that result from taking the substance are recorded in detail. In this way a huge variety of natural substances are tested for their healing and curative properties and can be added to the homeopathic pharmacy. Unlike orthodox drugs, homeopathic medicines are not tested on animals!
